Biography

Renowned Canadian classical pianist Angela Hewitt is from Ottawa, Ontario. She is the daughter of Godfrey Hewitt, who was once the choirmaster and organist at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa. She studied recorder, violin and classical ballet, but her talent was in piano. At the young age of 3, she began private piano lessons with her mother. By the age of 5, she received a scholarship and began studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with Earle Moss and Myrtle Guerrero. After that, she proceeded to study at the University of Ottawa under the tutelage of Jean-Paul Sevilla, graduating by the age of 18. Over the years, she has performed well in many competitions, including winning the Chopin Young Pianists’ Competition and the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition, and placing third in the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition. It was in these competitions where she gained international recognition, eventually winning four Junos. With endorsement from Hyperion Records, she made an award-winning cycle on Bach’s music, but also doing many recording of other composers, such as Liszt, Schumann, Rameau, Mozart, Haydn, Granados, Debussy, Ravel and many more. Hewitt has also partnered up with many other artists, giving masterclasses and performing worldwide as a soloist and with orchestra. During the pandemic, she has produced videos daily of her playing a piece, which acted as teaching material. Hewitt also participated un some online streamed performances and has begun performing live again, now that restrictions have eased off.
